Does hidden text help a resume pass ATS?
The short answer
No. If our check finds 20 or more characters of hidden text, it takes 25 points off the formatting score and halves the keyword score. Hidden text is white, tiny, off the page, or marked hidden in the file.
What we measured
Measured
The check looks for hidden text in both Word and PDF files. It counts text that is formatted as hidden in a Word file, text in a tiny font, text placed off the page, and white text with nothing dark behind it. Once the count reaches 20 characters, two things happen:
- The formatting score loses 25 points.
- The keyword score is cut to half of what the matching words would have earned.
White text on a dark band, such as a name in white across a dark header, is not counted as hidden, because that is ordinary design. In a Word file the hidden runs are removed from the text before keywords are matched. In a PDF, tiny and off-page runs are removed, but white text cannot be mapped back to individual words, so the penalty is what applies.
These are the rules of Passthrough's own scan, not a feed from any employer's system.
Why it backfires
Our advice
Hidden words are usually keywords copied from a job post, written so a machine sees them and a person does not. Our scan treats that as stuffing and says so in your report. We would also expect a human who ever selected the text, or opened the file in another program, to notice it. We have not measured that part, so treat it as our view and not a finding.
What to do instead
Our advice
Put the words you actually have experience with in your real bullets, in your own sentences. If a posting asks for a skill you do have and your resume never says so, add it where it is true and visible.
The Job Post Decoder shows which words in a posting count most, and the penalty simulator shows how this cost compares with the rest. For the full list, read how we score formatting.
